Clinical Attachment in Ophthalmology UK

Application is open throughout the year

This Clinical Attachment in Ophthalmology is designed to provide healthcare professionals with structured clinical exposure to ophthalmic services, focusing on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of eye conditions within a hospital setting.

Program Focus

The program is designed to enhance participants' knowledge of ophthalmology through supervised clinical exposure. This includes:

  • Outpatient Clinics and Ocular Diagnostics: Exposure to general and sub-specialty clinics including medical retina, glaucoma, and cornea, focusing on clinical assessment, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, and the interpretation of diagnostic imaging such as OCT, fundus autofluorescence, and visual fields.

  • Ophthalmic Surgical Observation: Insight into the operating theatre environment, observing surgical techniques in high-volume cataract surgery, vitreoretinal procedures, or oculoplastic surgery, alongside understanding preoperative assessment and postoperative care protocols.

  • Emergency Eye Care and Triage: Understanding the management of ophthalmic emergencies within an Eye Casualty or triage setting, including the assessment of acute vision loss, ocular trauma, and the urgent management of sight-threatening infections or inflammatory conditions.

Expected Outcome

Upon completion of the clinical attachment, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of ophthalmic services within an NHS hospital in the UK. The program aims to strengthen theoretical knowledge, improve familiarity with clinical workflows, and enhance understanding of best practices in ocular medicine and surgical management within the UK healthcare system.
