Clinical Attachment in Hepatology UK
Application is open throughout the year
This Clinical Attachment in Hepatology is designed to provide healthcare professionals with structured clinical exposure to specialist liver services, focusing on the diagnosis, management, and long-term care of patients with a wide spectrum of acute and chronic liver diseases within an NHS hospital setting.
Program Focus
The program is designed to enhance participants' knowledge of hepatology through supervised clinical exposure. This includes:
Chronic Liver Disease and Outpatient Management: Exposure to the management of chronic conditions such as Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), viral hepatitis, and autoimmune liver diseases, alongside the longitudinal monitoring of patients with compensated cirrhosis in a clinic setting.
Acute Hepatology and Inpatient Care: Insight into the management of decompensated liver disease on the wards, including the treatment of ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, and the emergency stabilization of patients with acute variceal bleeding.
Diagnostics and Hepatobiliary Procedures: Understanding the application of non-invasive assessment tools like transient elastography (FibroScan), the interpretation of specialized liver imaging, and observation of procedures such as diagnostic paracentesis and upper GI endoscopy for portal hypertension.
Expected Outcome
Upon completion of the clinical attachment, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of hepatology services within an NHS hospital in the UK. The program aims to strengthen theoretical knowledge of British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) guidelines, improve familiarity with specialist clinical workflows, and enhance understanding of evidence-based management of complex liver disorders.
