Clinical Attachment in Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary (HPB) Surgery UK

Application is open throughout the year

This Clinical Attachment in Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary (HPB) Surgery is designed to provide healthcare professionals with structured clinical exposure to specialist HPB services, focusing on the surgical and medical management of complex liver, pancreas, and biliary diseases within a high-volume NHS hospital setting.

Program Focus

The program is designed to enhance participants' knowledge of HPB care through supervised clinical exposure. This includes:

  • Operative HPB Surgery: Exposure to major surgical procedures including liver resections, pancreaticoduodenectomies (Whipple’s procedure), and biliary reconstructions, emphasizing surgical anatomy, intraoperative ultrasound, and the use of specialized hemostatic equipment in the operating theatre.

  • Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Management: Participation in specialist HPB MDT meetings to understand the collaborative decision-making process involving surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists in the staging and treatment planning of benign and malignant hepatobiliary conditions.

  • Peri-operative Care and ERAS Protocols: Insight into the management of high-dependency post-operative patients, focusing on Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) pathways, complex fluid management, nutritional support, and the early detection of complications such as biliary leaks or pancreatic fistulas.

Expected Outcome

Upon completion of the clinical attachment, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of HPB services within an NHS hospital in the UK. The program aims to strengthen theoretical knowledge of hepatobiliary pathology, improve familiarity with complex surgical workflows, and enhance understanding of multidisciplinary best practices within the UK healthcare system.
